Update on Composites

April 2015 Vol. 32, No. 03

Over the past 50 years, resin composites have undergone tremendous improvements in strength, wear resistance, reduced polymerization shrinkage, esthetics, and handling characteristics. The addition of nanofillers to composites has resulted in better polishability, surface smoothness and translucency. Recently, new formulations of composites provide the ability for bulk filling and improved flowability in a universal composite. This issue of THE DENTAL ADVISOR will explore current trends and techniques in simplifying posterior composites. The newest innovations in bulk-fill composites, advances in flowable composites, and sectional matrix systems will be reviewed, as well as a translation of what laboratory data means in a clinical setting.
