Some of my patients complain when I place the rubber dam. How can I improve my placement technique so that the entire process is less scary to the patient?

Rubber dam material comes in varying thicknesses. For example, SafeTouch Dental Dam (MEDICOM Inc.), comes in thin, medium, and thick gauges. A thinner dam is easier to place, requires less manipulation through interproximal spaces, and may feel less confining. Also, you can try placing the clamp and the frame on the rubber dam before placing it in the mouth. Once in place, the whole set-up can be introduced into the mouth in one motion. In this way, there is less maneuvering of the dam, and the whole process is faster and easier.
