Dr. John W. Farah

John W. Farah, DDS, PhD is a graduate of the University of Michigan. His degrees include a dual Ph.D. in Dental Materials and Aerospace Engineering, received in 1972, and a D.D.S. in 1978. Dr. Farah taught at the University of Florida and the University of Michigan. Dr. Farah initiated THE DENTAL ADVISOR in 1983. He and Dr. John Powers are co-editors of the publication and work closely with approximately 300 dental professionals to evaluate and rate new products and equipment. THE DENTAL ADVISOR is a dental consumer report type of publication and is published 10 times per year. In January 2006, a new 11,000 square foot facility was completed to house THE DENTAL ADVISOR publication, the Biomaterials Research Center, and the Education Center. A ceramic milling center is also located at this facility. This milling center serves for the production and research of CAD/CAM all-ceramic restorations. This state-of-the-art testing facility, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is used to test products that are featured in THE DENTAL ADVISOR and host seminars and Continuing Education courses for dental professionals. In addition to THE DENTAL ADVISOR, Dr. Farah has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in professional dental journals and also maintains a general dental practice in Ann Arbor, Michigan focusing on esthetic dentistry. He lectures both nationally and internationally.

Dr. John M. Powers

John M. Powers, PhD is a graduate of the University of Michigan, earning a BS in Chemistry in 1967 and a PhD in Dental Materials and Mechanical Engineering in 1972. He was a professor at the University of Michigan School Of Dentistry from 1972 to 1988 and at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston from 1988 to 2005. He is currently Professor of Oral Biomaterials at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston as well as Senior Vice-President of Dental Consultants, Inc. Dr. Powers co-founded THE DENTAL ADVISOR in 1983, and continues his role as Editor of the publication. Dr. Powers is a member of the American Association for Dental Research and the American Dental Education Association. He is also a fellow of the Academy of Dental Materials. Dr. Powers is an investigator on scientific protocols evaluating adhesives, composites, impression materials, and cements. Dr. Powers has authored more than 870 scientific publications. He is editor/author of three books: Craig's Restorative Dental Materials, Dental Materials - Properties and Manipulation, and Esthetic Color Training in Dentistry. He lectures internationally on research in dental materials.

Dr. Peter Yaman

Peter Yaman DDS, MS is a Clinical Professor of Dentistry at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He received both his DDS (1971) and MS (1975 Restorative Dentistry) degrees from Michigan. He maintained a part-time private practice and teaching appointment for 23 years prior to joining the University of Michigan Dental Faculty full-time in 1999. Currently he is the Director of the Graduate Restorative Program at Michigan, is on the editorial board of the Operative Dentistry Journal and is a reviewer for the Journal of the American Dental Association and the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. He is a consultant to the United States Naval Dental School, the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners, the Michigan Dental Association and numerous dental manufacturers. Dr. Yaman has authored numerous journal articles and scientific abstracts. He has lectured in the United States as well as internationally on restorative procedures with emphasis on compromised teeth and esthetics. Research interests include restorative materials and esthetic techniques. He is a member of the International Association of Dental Research, the Academy of Operative Dentistry and the American Dental Association.

Dr. Sabiha S. Bunek

Sabiha S. Bunek, DDS was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, chose the University of Michigan School of Dentistry because of its excellent professional training and her affection for the diversity and vibrancy of her hometown. Dr. Bunek joined Enspire Dental in 2006. Her career is devoted to the promotion of proper dental care and alleviating patient anxieties about dental treatment. She applies her creativity and esthetic principles to leading-edge cosmetic and restorative dentistry. She regularly expands her expertise through her work as an Assistant Editor of THE DENTAL ADVISOR and continuing education courses. Away from the office, Dr. Bunek enjoys the outdoors, cooking, yoga, decorating, and traveling with her husband. Dr. Bunek is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Dr. Mark Murphy

Mark Murphy, DDS, FAGD is a featured presenter for the National Dental Network, National Lab Network, Pankey Institute and the Dental Advisor. He practices general dentistry on a limited basis in Rochester, Michigan. Mark graduated from UDM School of Dentistry in 1981 and continued teaching Anatomy and Crown and Bridge part time for several years. Mark has lectured internationally on Practice Management, Philosophy, Communication, Case Acceptance, Implants, Materials, Occlusion, and TMD. Mark Murphy is the President of National Lab Network, a distance education and training company dedicated to helping the labs train and educate their teams and clients. Mark began as a lab technician, practiced general dentistry in Rochester, Michigan, he is the former VP of Operations of DTI Dental Technologies Inc. and has served on the Faculty of The Pankey Institute since 1991 until taking a position as Director of Professional Relations during 2005. Mark continues to serve Lab Technology on various NADL committees and the Ident alloy Council. Mark has lectured at dozens of dental laboratory meetings throughout North America on Operational Management, Philosophy, Marketing, Communication and Quality and Competitive Issues facing Labs Today. He is an exciting and very entertaining speaker, blending a stand-up style of humor and anecdotes with current research and information that you can take home and use tomorrow. Rave reviews follow his presentations wherever he goes!

Dr. Mert N. Aksu

Mert N. Aksu, JD, DDS is Associate Professor for the Department of Patient Management and Associate Dean, Clinic Administration, at the University of Detroit Mercy. He also teaches and lectures on practice management topics. Dr. Aksu earned a BS in Biological Sciences and Psychology from the University of Michigan Dearborn, a DDS from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, and a JD from Wayne State University. He also completed a MS in Health Services Administration at the University of Michigan in 2000. Dr. Aksu is the recipient of numerous clinical awards including the Pierre Fauchard Academy, American Association of Orthodontists, and the F. B. Vedder Society. He is currently a member of the State Bar of Michigan, a Fellow with the American College of Legal Medicine, and a Fellow with the American College of Dentists. Dr. Aksu serves as an advisor to Delta Dental, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and numerous law firms throughout the state of Michigan, He maintains a private practice in general dentistry in Farmington Hills, MI.

Dr. Brent Kolb

Brent Kolb, DDS is currently an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Michigan Dental School, graduated in 1997 from Miami University with undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics. Dr. Kolb is a 2003 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. In June 2004, he completed one year of advanced training in general dentistry at The University of Michigan. Dr. Kolb is a proud member of The Michigan Dental Association, The American Dental Association, The Academy of General Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Dr. Charles McLaren

Charles McLaren DDS, MS received his B.S.E. in Materials Science and Engineering, D.D.S., and M.S. in restorative dentistry all from the University of Michigan. Dr. McLaren has taught pre-clinical dentistry, oral medicine and diagnosis, and clinical dentistry at the University of Michigan as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association, Saginaw Valley District Dental Society, Academy of Operative Dentistry, Omicron Kappa Upsilon (honorary dental society) and Alpha Sigma Mu (National Metallurgical Materials Society). He has been with THE DENTAL ADVISOR since 1999 as an editor and contributing author. He is in private practice in Midland and Saginaw, MI.

Robert S. Wisler, CDT

Robert S. Wisler, CDT owns and operates Alpha Dental Studio, Inc., in Farmington Hills, Michigan, a Certified Dental Laboratory. He graduated from Ferris State University’s Dental Technology program in 1979 and became a Certified Dental Technician in 1982. He spent the first 10 years of his career as an “in house” technician for three general dentists that specialized in crown and bridge and implants. During this time, specific techniques were developed, through the use of microscopes, chair side assistance and meticulous attention to detail, to allow for precision restorations to be placed with minimal chair time. His practice today employs twelve PTC-trained technicians, each working under a microscope, in a state-of-the-art, KAVO and CAD/CAM-equipped laboratory. He is a student of occlusion based in the OBI and Kois disciplines; a ‘sustaining member’ of the AACD and is enhancing Alpha’s quality systems through DAMAS certification. Along with a reputation for excellent fit, function and esthetics, Alpha Dental Studio carries on the tradition of patient service that you would expect from an “in-house” laboratory, through the use of their fully-functional, in-lab operatory. A foundation of dentist/technician communication and microscopically fabricated restorations are Robert's hallmarks. Promoting continuing education for his technicians, hosting seminars for doctors and speaking to students at local dental schools, allows Robert to share his passion for excellence in Dental Technology.

Dr. Doug Thompson

Doug Thompson, DDS began his dental career at eighteen years old working as an in house laboratory technician. His laboratory experience fueled an interest in clinical dentistry. Over the next ten years, while he worked full time, he completed the necessary pre-doctorate courses and was accepted to the University Of Michigan School Of Dentistry. Upon graduating in 1996 he completed a one year hospital based V. A. Residency Program in General Dentistry. He then bought an established private practice in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and practices there today. Dr. Thompson has completed hundreds of hours of continuing education. He is striving for excellence and is on a path of continuous improvement in his daily practice. In 2005 he earned Mentor status and in 2008 achieved the distinction of Clinical Instructor assisting with the education of students at the Kois Center in Seattle, Washington. This post graduate curriculum is taught by Dr. John Kois and is highly regarded for its evidenced based program content and the impact it has on developing personal practice style. Dr. Thompson shares his ideas and techniques in both lecture and workshop formats in areas of digital photography, periodontal protocols, treatment planning, and risk assessment treatment strategies all to stimulate demand for our services and to increase the quality of our dental care.

Dr. Joe Ontiveros

Joe Ontiveros, DDS, MS received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he was involved in research and clinical instruction in the Division of Esthetic Dentistry. He also received his Master's in Oral Biomaterials from the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Science at Houston. Dr. Ontiveros is past Scientific Editor for REALITY Publishing and past Director of Research for REALITY Research Lab. He has published on numerous topics related to esthetic biomaterials and the book "Esthetic Color Training in Dentistry" chapter on Communication of Color and Appearance. He is a recipient of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry Merit Award and currently is Head of the Section of Biomaterials and Director of Clinical Esthetic Dentistry at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston.
