Tuff-Temp is a provisional crown and bridge resin with rubberized-urethane polymer chemistry. The material is formulated to provide greater strength and stability, as well as a tighter fitting provisional restoration than acrylics and bis-acrylics. Tuff-Temp can be trimmed with a low-speed acrylic bur, fine-grit diamond bur or finishing and polishing disks. It is dual-cured (self-cured with fast light-cure option). Tuff-Temp has a working time of 45 seconds, an initial self-cured setting time of 2:15 minutes from beginning of mix (approximately 90 seconds after insertion in the mouth) at which time it should be removed from the mouth. Final self-cured setting time is 5 minutes from the beginning of the mix; light-cured setting time is 20 seconds. Tuff-Temp is available in five shades in either 50-ml cartridges or 5-ml syringes. Consultants evaluated the 5-ml syringes of shades A1, A2 and B1, along with the Provisional Glaze. Tuff-Temp was evaluated by 27 consultants for provisionalization of 519 single units, bridges and veneers. It received a 91% rating.

The formulation of Tuff-Temp produces a temporary restoration that is different from commonly available bis-acryl or acrylic materials. After setting, Tuff-Temp is very hard, yet easy to trim. The most outstanding feature is the crisp, accurate margins that can be obtained with this material. Consultants reported that Tuff-Temp provisionals had a tight fit with very good retention and durability. The light-curing feature was especially useful for clinicians using a clear matrix material that allowed faster setting in the mouth; however, consultants commented that the self-cured setting time is too long. Some practice was required to learn the proper curing time to avoid over-curing and locking the provisional onto the preparation. During trimming, Tuff-Temp grinds to a fine powder, and finishing instruments do not gum up or clog. Fifty-two percent of consultants reported that Tuff-Temp was better than their current provisional material, whereas 37% reported it was equivalent. Sixty-seven percent would switch to Tuff-Temp and 85% would recommend it to a colleague.
Be sure to remove at 2:15 minutes or earlier (from beginning of mix) to prevent provisional from locking onto preparation.
Do not use for very retentive preparations or preparations with grooves and boxes (3/4-crowns and gold onlays).
