  • "Decrease the opacity to improve esthetics."
  • "Eliminate the shade shift that occurs when the material is cured."

Description

Simile is a nanohybrid composite intended for use in Class I through Class V restorations. The composite contains UDMA and HDDMA with 68% filler by volume, including barium glass fillers (0.7 µm) and zirconium barium silicate (0.004 µm). On average, these particles are slightly smaller than those in a microfill. Simile is available in kits of 10, 4-g syringes or 100 single-dose capsules in Vita Shades A1, A2, A3, A3.5, B1, B2, B3, C2, opaque universal, and incisal. Sixteen editors placed over 150 direct Simile restorations during a 6-week period.

Suggested Retail Cost

  • $415.95/10-shade syringe kit
  • $274.95/10-shade single dose kit

Editors' Observations

Manufacturer's Instructions

The instructions for use and handling of Simile are clear and concise. Editors noted that the instructions should indicate preparing the surface to be restored by first etching and applying a bonding agent.

Completeness of Kit

The kit is well-organized in a sturdy box and is efficient for use in the operatory. No etchant, bonding system or accessories are included in the kit but are available separately. The shapes provided in the kit are adequate for good esthetics in most restorative cases.

Ease of Using the System

The system is uncomplicated, easy to use and readily integrated into a dental practice. The material does not set prematurely under ambient light, allowing a long working time when sculpting restorations.

Handling

Simile is quite viscous and provides ideal resistance to packing, resulting in firm interproximal contacts. The composite is not sticky and is nicely sculptable. While the material appears fairly dry when expressed from the 4-g syringes, it develops a very good working viscosity if rolled on a paper pad.

Shade Accuracy

A shade shift was observed from the uncured to the cured composite. After curing, the shade match was more accurate. Editors found the material to be too opaque for use in many anterior and some posterior cases.

Blending of Composite with Tooth

Most posterior restorations blended adequately with natural tooth structure; however, the opacity of the material makes blending in the anterior somewhat more difficult.

Final Polish

The final polish is excellent. A smooth, high gloss surface is readily obtained.
