Description

Luxator instruments are periodontal ligament knives to aid in atraumatic extractions. The fine, tapered blade compresses the alveolar bone, cuts the membrane and eases the tooth from its socket. The handle is designed for tactile control while minimizing force during use. The tip is thin and sharp, so that it inserts easily between bone and root with minimal damage to the tissues. Luxator instruments are available in 10 blade sizes and configurations for various extraction indications. Consultants evaluated two Luxator instruments: L-3S (3-mm straight for interproximal use) and L-3CA (3-mm contra-angle for lingual and/or distal use). The instrument handles are color-coded and numbers are marked on the shaft for identification. Luxator instruments are autoclavable stainless steel and can be sterilized and stored in the Fixus 1 cassettes, which are sold separately. Twenty-two consultants evaluated Luxator in 911 extraction procedures. This product received a 92% clinical rating.

Product Features

Luxator is a well-constructed extraction instrument. The ergonomic design and the size of the handle make the use of the instruments very comfortable for most clinicians. The slip-resistant handle, the weight and the sharpness of the blade were rated very good and allowed for extractions with minimal trauma to bone and soft tissue. Consultants reported that the instruments were very effective. They liked the small, narrow tip size for difficult areas. Ninety-four percent of the extraction sites involved in the Luxator evaluation were evaluated post-operatively to check the condition of the sites. Consultants reported that 81% of these sites had healed the same as or better than would be expected with their usual techniques. Seventy-three percent of consultants rated Luxator to be equal to or better than their current extraction instruments.

Clinical Tips

  • Do not use this instrument as an elevator.
  • Take your time and concentrate on placing the blade in the PDL space; then lightly rotate, twist and keep moving apically.
  • Care must be taken not to slip and damage soft tissue if the operator is not used to using an instrument in a vertical direction.
