Consultants' Comments

  • “Provides immediate results for sensitive cervical lesions.”
  • “This is what I use when other desensitizers have failed.”
  • “Reduce the number of steps.”

Description

BisBlock is an oxalate-based desensitizer for reducing and preventing dentin sensitivity. The desensitization is designed to be long lasting, with immediate results. It can be used under crowns before cementation, under restorations and for cervical root exposure. The kit contains one 6-ml bottle of BisBlock, one 6-ml bottle of One-Step Plus (5th-generation bonding agent), a syringe of Uni-Etch and accessories. The sequence of desensitizing differs from other materials. With BisBlock, the tooth is first etched and rinsed, followed by application of BisBlock, thorough rinsing, and finally an application of One-Step Plus, and light curing to seal the surface. The material may be used with resin composite restorations and the manufacturer reports that the bond strength is not affected. BisBlock was evaluated by 22 consultants in 225 dental procedures over a three-month evaluation period.

Product Features

The instructions were rated good, although the procedure required many steps and was more time consuming than the desensitizing procedures than most consultants were currently using. The viscosities of the etchant and One-Step Plus are appropriate. BisBlock is more viscous than most desensitizers and is difficult to dispense from the squeeze bottle. The product works well for desensitizing cervical lesions, usually with immediate relief. Since etching, rinsing and air-drying are required, many patients experience sensitivity during the procedures. Several consultants indicated better results when a rubber dam or good isolation was used. The material adheres to the tooth well when used properly. No bond failures were reported during the evaluation period. Seventy percent found BisBlock to be equivalent to or better than their current desensitizing agent and 66% would recommend BisBlock to a colleague.
